Joel's accidental electrocution leads him to a mysterious realm where he forms an extraordinary bond with Gunter, a puppet golden Labrador, as they navigate the island's lightning-struck memories and seek a way back home.
“Cardboard Island” is a poignant exploration of love, family, and self-discovery. Joel’s unexpected journey challenges him to confront his fears and confront the unresolved emotions that shaped his life. The film delves into the power of memories and their ability to forge deep connections, even across realms. Through the bond between Joel and Gunter, the audience witnesses the transformative power of music and the importance of embracing one’s true self. Joel’s dreams of being a war hero serve as a metaphor for the inner battles we face and the sacrifices we make for love. Ultimately, the film highlights the bittersweet nature of letting go and finding closure.
Cardboard Island is a testament to classic Hollywood filmmaking. I am drawn to the charm of cheap practical effects and hands-on techniques that were once the backbone of the industry. The process of figuring out how to make everything work is exhilarating, and I thrive on the excitement of solving prob- lems and pushing the boundaries of what is possible within limited resources.
As a filmmaker, I have built a substantial portfolio, having completed at least one feature film every year since my freshman year of college. However, Cardboard Island holds a special place in my heart as it explores the theme of fatherhood and maturing, a subject I have never tackled before. This experimental project allows me to test the traditional boundaries of filmmaking and provides a liberating artistic experience where I can fully express my creativity.
